CALA joined San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith and other supporters in San Diego on September 12 to highlight the enormous amount of taxpayer money wasted by the city fighting abusive lawsuits, and the San Diego Union-Tribune and KPBS were there to report on it. Here is what they had to say:
"The city of San Diego spent $17 million last year fighting frivolous lawsuits, according to a report by a group seeking to limit such suits.
A report conducted for California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse concluded San Diego spent $17 million on frivolous lawsuits and while other major cities in the state spent $92 million. In addition to the public cost, the group says such suits cost businesses jobs.
The group hopes to convince California legislators to embrace a system where the losers of a lawsuit pay for the opposition’s legal fees under certain circumstances."
