On May 2nd and 3rd one of my favorite groups is coming to town for its annual rite of passage. Oh I am sorry, I meant the Consumer Attorneys of California’s 2011 Justice Day. And this year they are celebrating their 50th anniversary. Seriously, I don't even know why they bother coming to town. The consumer attorneys have done such a good job stacking the deck in Sacramento that it would seem like they have things covered. And by staying home they actually might make Al Gore happy and reduce their carbon footprint by not driving or flying those personal jets. I do not think I need to wish them well. They have done a good job of covering all their bases. And their investment of more than $33 million in political races over the past decade has not hurt, either. They have locked up the legislature. Their lucky numbers must be 7 and 3 because that is the vote every time legal reform comes up in committee. And I have not exactly heard any constitutional officers mention the term "legal reform" recently, either. Our state still has one of the worst legal climates in the nation. A business has left the state an average of every business day this year. There does not seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel. Well maybe, but that is the high speed rail coming at you. The Pacific Research Institute in its 2010 Tort Liability Index stated that just one legal reform would create 141,000 jobs in California. Between reform of the wage and hour laws and the ADA shakedown lawsuits, I would think we would add quite a few more jobs than that if we get serious about fixing our economy. The trial lawyer train needs to be derailed. It is not about justice, it is about money – money that needs to be redirected from the trial lawyers’ pockets back into the California economy. |
