Today many people will be gathering in Washington, D.C. to call on Congress to reform the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). People representing all walks of life and businesses will be expressing frustration that a supposed "improvement act" has the potential to be such an economic disaster. One can only hope that government officials hear the cries for reform. On Monday the Wall Street Journal called on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to stop the madness. Nancy Pelosi and Congress only want to point the finger at the CPSC and the Commission seems rudderless. More bills are being introduced and more confusion is being generated. In the meantime there is a law on the books (no pun intended) and no one seems to care about the thousands of businesses and charities being hurt in the process. Lower income people are being swept into the mess as secondhand goods are pulled from the shelves. The Albany Public Library said that it is going to have to discard 10,000 books alone if an exemption is not made available. Are you kidding me? Libraries across the nation are already struggling with budget cuts and now they have to discard or destroy books because of the CPSC and Congress' inaction. Goodwill Industries in San Luis Obispo does not even carry children's toys anymore. Hopefully someone will hear the voices on April 1st. And believe me this is no April Fool Joke. This is a modern day book burning sponsored by our own government. |
