Should We Rename CPSIA the Personal Injury Lawyer Full Employment Act?

Billions of dollars – billions – of perfectly safe toys, clothing, books, and other children’s products are being taken off store shelves and thrown away, small businesses have been forced to close their doors forever, non-profits and charities are being hurt, jobs are being lost – all in the name of helping consumers.

This is the poster child for what happens when lawmakers have a knee-jerk over reaction and rush through a bill that apparently even the prime author didn’t bother to read. If this law isn’t fixed, and fast, the next wave of devastating consequences will descend – the personal injury lawyers!
The current penalty for violating the law is $8K per infraction, which will increase to $10K in August. Some local businesses here in San Diego say just one infraction could put them out of business. Another cottage industry, ala the ADA access law abusers. It would be more aptly named The Personal Injury Lawyer Full Employment Act.

Congress made a huge mistake and the people that can fix it are so far refusing to. Write to Congressman Waxman and demand that he hold hearings into this fiasco.
