In its Our View today, the Marysville Appeal Democrat expressed hope that the new ADA reform measure signed into law last year would help bring an end to shakedown lawsuits. The new law took effect January 1st. In their commentary, the editorial board stated:
"As Maryanne Maloney of the California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse explains, the federal Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 had the good intention of making public accommodations accessible for the disabled. That law prompted a California law adding financial penalties for noncompliance. That, in turn, created what Ms. Maloney rightly describes as "a cottage industry for personal-injury lawyers to abuse the law for their own financial gain." Indeed they have."
